Tilt Works was a collaboration between myself and Steve Roche and we were introduced by Public Art Officer Anna Netri.

Layer Studio worked up a strong concept that celebrates the industrial heritage of The Tilt Works, a new housing development in Sheffield and then handed the reins to Steve Roche. I came on board to add a dimension of colour and impact. My input changed the design and we worked well together responding to the pieces in front of us, drawing straight onto the stone.

Steve put in geometric mycelium to represent the positive change the development makes to the site and the wider community. These are simply cut so as not to detract from the overall shape, but add really interesting geometry where the faces of the stone meet. He added a simple texture to represent the pouring of molten steel. Sparrow-pecking is one of the first things you learn as a stonemason, it is a versatile and tactile finish.

We decided to highlight the channels with a rich gold paint, which in the sunshine is reflective of molten steel and liquid metal.
My characterful birds brought add a playful twist to the pieces, they can be representative of both community and nature. In my murals you will see me play with depth, layers and structural shapes and this project allowed me to work into those themes.
